Why does a car need 2 alternators?
![]() 07/25/2017 at 11:16 |

That has to be at least 3 turbos right there

It’s apparently a real thing, I googled it expecting a bunch of ‘shopped pics, but no. I think it’s aimed at the O&E crowd, or if you’re running a lot of aux equipment (plow, etc.)

See my reply to functionoverfashion - - I think it’s aimed at people going way off road, running a lot of aftermarket electronics, etc.

Police cars, ambulances, etc. Probably refrigerated vans too?

what about a Quad turbo setup

Whinching, heavy aux loads, big stereo system...

Police package, or other use where it will be idling and using accessories constantly.

Sometimes for 24v, sometimes to charge two 12v batteries like a motorhome with a leisure battery

Is there even a motor in there to drive those things? :)

How else is he supposed to power the 4 15" subs in the trunk?

Now that’s just ridiculous - what is that?
![]() 07/25/2017 at 12:07 |

have no idea, but guessing it’s for a many, many amps and sub-woofers...

Makes sense - there’s a lot of weirdness going on there. Appears to be a carbureted V8, vertical exhaust stacks, truck tires, and all those alternators... Seems like a truck of some sort?

I bet all those together make more power than a flux capacitor!

Makes sense, actually. I had a pretty substantial sound system in my old boat. That, coupled with lots of old corroded wires running everything, the volt gauge would visibly move with the beat of the music.

Yeah, depending on how much you were running, you could either get a more heavy duty alternator, or double up if you really have a lot running.

In my case it was only a single 1,000 watt amp; mostly old electricals. In the new boat, ironically, there are two amps of similar power (each) but the alternators of modern (2003) boats have somewhat caught up to the needs. But then, it struggles if you’re filling/emptying ballast, running the music and the heater...

It’s common on trucks outfitted with a snow plow package. Some police cars in the past had dual alternators, but I don’t know if they still do.

Interesting and it makes sense now that I think about it. I worked at a Fisher Plow dealer and didn’t see this setup, but maybe I wasn’t looking. I didn’t do the installations, but would see them in progress all the time. Then again, with a modern 1-ton truck, I’d need a step ladder to see down into the engine and I’m 5'11.
